Tabarrini, Featured Wines, and Upcoming Tastings

What I Tasted: Wines From Tabarrini, Plus Featured Wines and Upcoming Tastings!

What I Was Drinking Yesterday: Wines from Tabarrini

I had the privilege of tasting wines the other day with Luigi from Vinaiocaprese Imports and I was really loving the wines from Tabarrini. He tasted me on one white wine and four reds, The reds consisted of one red blend (Boccatone) from the Montefalco appellation in Umbria, and three Montefalco Sagrantino wines from three different vineyard sites (Colle Grimaldesco, Campo alla Cerqua, and Colle Alle Macchie).

The White:

The Tabarrini Adarmando Bianco ($30/BTL) is 100% Trebbiano Spoletino. It is an Umbrian grape that is rapidly making a comeback in Montefalco and Tabarrini is at the forefront. Derived from sandy, clay soils, these wines are fermented with native yeasts and aged in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for at least 12 months on the lees. Ultimately, what becomes of the grapes is a wine of great elegance and charm. 2017 had a smaller production. Greenish tones, round mouthfeel, notes of dominant pineapple preceded by citrus and flint. A subtle spritz and a beautiful leesy finish.

The Reds:

The Montefalco Rosso DOC Boccatone ($30/BTL) is a blend of traditional grapes (Sangiovese and Sagrantino) and a small addition of Barbera that gives it more of a modern twist. This wine is aged for two years in large barrels and then additional two years in the bottle. Substantially, this wine is a reserva, although not labeled as such. This will become a future classic of Montefalco!Colle Grimaldesco ($52/BTL) is the most well-known Sagrantino from Tabarrini because it is the older label. Colle Grimaldesco has mixed sections of soil, so you have clay-limestone and river stones. The complexity of the soil is the same complexity on the wine. Beautiful aromatics but on the mouthfeel you have a wine that is so strong, full-bodied, and brimming with deep dark fruit. Campo alla Cerqua ($59/BTL) is a small vineyard (only 1 acre) that produces only 1800 bottles per year. These grapes exhibit elegance due to the brackish river pebble soils. The flavor profile exhibits more salinity and minerality than the other single vineyard Sagrantino wines. The Campo alla Cerqua is definitely an age-worthy wine. It's still a baby and needs time. However, if you are planning on drinking now, I would suggest opening this wine early. It might be a little aggressive once opened, but as it aerates, it will become more approachable over time.  This is an extremely rare wine. There were only 165 cases in total of this wine produced and a limited amount of them were imported into the US. If you plan on drinking one now, open it early. Sagrantino may be a little aggressive right when it is opened, but as air gets integrated into the wine, it becomes more beautiful and approachable over time. Sometimes it is better the next day!The Colle Alle Macchie ($65/BTL), which is the southernmost vineyard and on the highest hill of Montefalco (Roughly 1,245 feet), consists of muddy clay-lime soil and has two plots, one facing east and one facing south. The 2013 vintage was on Wine Spectator's Top 100 List of 2018 and like they mention: it's not for the fainthearted. It gives off a very muscular and powerful wine that is very deep and tannic.

New Wines Just In

Check out what's hot on our shelves right now!

100% Niellucciu, a native Corsican grape.  Fresh and full on the palate with aromas of grapefruit and red currants. Such an extremely light and delicately balanced, stylish, well-made wine. Its freshness makes it perfect as an aperitif and its elegance allows it to accompany the finest Mediterranean or exotic dishes.

Delicious biodynamic wine from Piedmont. Made from 100% Cortese grapes. Push aside your Pinot Grigio and set aside your Sancerre. A delicious alternative for your white wine enjoyment. This Gavi is crisp and vibrant with a pleasant stony backbone. Flavors of green apple, pear and a lovely, enlivening finish of white flower and honeydew melon.

Located in the northeastern corner of Italy on the Slovenian border, these sunny, high-altitude slopes have gray and yellow marl and clay soils. This gives the Pinot Grigio abundant minerality with notes of stone fruit (peach, pear), and flint. Juicy acidity in the front and lingering minerals in the back. Stock up while you can!

Aged for 16 months in 30% new French oak, 70% neutral French oak. From Roberts Road Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap. Full-bodied, vibrant, with green apple notes and peach. The French oak gives off a subtle toast and butterscotch.

Vibrant, ripe, red cherry and raspberry aromas. Fresh red fruits on the palate, bright acidity, and a silky smooth texture. Gentle spices and a toasty finish that lingers in your mouth. A most excellent autumn wine!

60% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot.A Bordeaux-style blend from Andrea Franchetti's 200 hectare estate. Le Cupole has  an abundance of black cherries, dark chocolate, tobacco, and a smoked earth note. The finish persists with a kind of lingering minerality that is usually found in Bordeaux but is lacking in most Super Tuscans.

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc. Band of Vintners consists of a group of seven winemakers and wine industry vets with ties to Lokoya, Cardinale, HdV, Larkmead to name a few. The goal: to make the best pound-for-pound wine in Napa Valley. Aged 15 months in new and used French oak. Although fresh and balanced on the palate, it is rich in fruit with a very fine and spicy texture. Touches of black pepper and blue fruits on the long, lingering finish.

100% Primitivo. This full-bodied red is sourced from clay-based soils in Goia del Colle and Manduria and ages for 10 months in steel and 6 months in barrique. A fascinating bouqet of vanilla, cedar, and ripe cherries. The taste is full-bodied and with a robust long finish of plum and blackberry. A perfect pairing with pizza, pasta, or a Thanksgiving dinner.
