The Vine Post Summer Wines: Our Picks For When It's Hot Outside! Also: Upcoming Events!

Summer Wine Selections!

Greetings! Let’s enjoy summer early. Although Florida has only two seasons, hot and hotter, let's cool off by the pool and have a glass (or two) of my current wine recommendations. This is a rather ever-changing list. I will continually add to it throughout the summer. Our selections are on our site here:

Tessari 'Bine Longhe' Soave Classico, Veneto 2017 -$29/BTL

100% Garganega. Bine Longhe is straw in color, slightly richer due to a later harvest, picked after the grapes have been over ripened for 20 days. The wine has a honeyed herbaceous aroma. A stony mineral presence is clearly evident, lively on the palate, with a slight aftertaste of bitter almonds. This Soave is perfect to pair with herby pasta dishes like Pappardelle with Zucchini and mint-parsley Pesto or fresh tuna salad with avocado.

Thomas Pico Pattes Loup Chablis, Burgundy 2018 -$47/BTL

Certified organic, all hand harvested. Unfined and unfiltered. Domaine Pattes Loup covers is starting to become a more known producer of Chablis catering to both the mainstream and natural wine enthusiasts. 40% is fermented in concrete egg fermenters, the remaining is fermented in stainless steel. This gives the wine more roundness and imparts more richer fruit of lemon verbena, slate, stone and chalk.

Domaine Mee Godard Morgon 'Corcelette', Beaujolais 2018 -$39/BTL

100% Gamay. All organic. You are looking at a one woman show. She does it all. Grows, harvests, makes, and sells her wine. Southeast facing granite slopes and 70 year old vines. Earthy and extremely refreshing, a perfect balance of gravel and tart red fruits.

Kellerei-Cantina Andrian Pinot Noir Alto Adige, Trentino-Alto Adige 2018 - $30/BTL

Calcareous clay and angular white dolomite soils. Must fermentation in stainless steel vats and malolactic fermentation and aging in big oak casks. Ruby red in color with aromas of berries and dried fruit. Dry and light-bodied. The wine exhibits lovely balance of acidity and fruit. Soft tannins make this wine complex, elegant, and perfect to drink on its own or with food.

Upcoming Events

June 9th @ 5:30PM - Castello di Monsanto/Pertinace Wine Tastingw/Geri Coppola of Freixenet Mionetto ($18/person)

The Monsanto winery is owned by the Bianchi family. Father, Fabrizio and daughter, Laura manage the Winery today. Castello di Monsanto owns some of the best vineyard sites within the appellation and is home to the largest reserves of Chianti Classico in Tuscany. In 1962, Fabrizio Bianchi founded the winery after it was presented to him as a wedding gift from his parents. That same year, pioneering Monsanto was the first winery to make a Chianti Classico Cru from the single ‘Il Poggio’ vineyard and worked to eliminate white grapes from Chianti Classico Riserva blend. Further, in 1981 Monsanto harvested the first 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Nemo, from the Il Mulino vineyard.

Founded in 1972 by Mario Barbero, Pertinace is named after the Roman Emperor Publio Elvio Pertinace who was born in the hillside sides of Barbaresco. The Winery, a cooperative, was formed by twelve farmers who over the years had become good friends. Among them they owned some of the choicest vineyard land in the region and supplied grapes to some of Italy’s top winemakers. Over time, they developed a shared passion for producing the best wines from their own vineyards, which led to the decision to create a winery of their own. Thus Pertinace was born.

Pertinace’s 15 growers have 170 acres of vineyards under cultivation, producing approximately 4,000 hectolitres of wine annually. Most of the group’s vineyards are located near the village of Treiso, one of the main communes in the Barbaresco D.O.C. zone. Treiso is known for its high slopes with soil that is primarily calcareous marl. Pertinace has 3 Vineyard Crus: Marcarini, Nervo and Castellizzano.
