For those that don't know, Peju Winery is one of those awesome Napa Valley success stories. Tony Peju bought land in Napa (about 30 acres) in the early 80's, right smack dab in the heart of Rutherford! I don't really know if most people can do that these days since the land now probably costs an arm and a leg. His neighbors were Mondavi, Beaulieu Vineyard, and Inglenook so the land was ideal for producing Cabernet grapes. He hired some local winemakers and the rest is history. They make on average about 40,000 cases a year but most is sold at the winery so not a large amount gets sent out and they only sell in 40 states, Canada, and Japan. They farm organically at the vineyard and they also make many different varietals of wine. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from their multiple vineyard sites and it is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Syrah, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec. They age it in French and American oak but it's not predominately an oak driven wine but it does give some nice complexity to the wine. On the nose, I get a little bit of vanilla, mocha, black currant, and cherry with some spices like cloves. It's very tasty. It has a nice cherry and blackberry flavor to it with a little bit of vanilla and some spice notes. It's definitely a great wine that is ready to drink now but I would imagine that it's only going to improve within the next 3 to 5 years. To place an order, email us at [email protected] or call us at (561) 935-1720.
