Tasted: 2016 Domaine Fabien Coche Saint-Aubin Blanc

We tasted some of the wines from Domaine Fabien Coche last weekend. Had an amazing time as we got to sit and talk in-depth about a phenomenal producer and winemaker. Their 2016 vintage white wines were quite impressive. First, a little backstory about these wines. For those who are unfamilar with the Coche name, it carries some serious clout in Burgundy. Fabien Coche comes from the same family (Coche-Bizouard) as Domaine Coche-Dury, which is run by Fabien's cousin Raphael. Fabien, however, had taken over the family's domaine in 2005. Fabien is the fourth generation vigneron within his family. His vineyard holdings total around 11 hectares spread across Meursault, Auxey-Duresses, Monthelie, and Pommard. More than half of their vines are over 60 years old. The family has been using organic farming practices since 1998 on the 40 plots of vines the family owns.

What I enjoyed about these wines was that they were stylistically pure. Harvesting is done manually and Fabien likes to pick later than his neighbors. Sometimes he will wait over a week longer and the end result is a highly aromatic and concentrated intense flavors on the palate. At the most, 25% new oak is used along with a notable percentage of larger format barrels. Fabien's wines have the acidity like that of Domaine Roulot, but also the rich texture like the wines of Coche-Doury.I tasted the following lineup:

  • 2016 Domaine Fabien Coche Saint-Aubin Blanc ($48/BTL) Elegant and fresh on the nose with soft, ripe fruits, and a generous amount of flint. On the palate, well-rounded and creamy, balanced acidity, and subtle salinity.

  • 2016 Domaine Fabien Coche Meursault Les Chevaliers ($77/BTL) *Currently on backorder: Available End of March*

We managed to get some of the Saint-Aubin in. Their Meursault will be in shortly. Let us know if you would like to order!

NV Pierre Cellier Prestige Brut, Champagne, France - $39/BTL

30% Chardonnay, 60% Pinot Noir, 10% Pinot Meunier. In 1977, following a request from a loyal customer in Paris, Philippe Gonet created the Pierre Cellier line from the Gonet estate vineyards naming it in honor of his first-born son (Pierre) and his wife's maiden name. The request was for a younger, more approachable, fruit-driven style, with value in mind. Beautiful aromatics of orchard fruits and brioche, the bubbles are relaxed yet precise, the texture is lush, and the finish is satisfying. 8g/L.

A wine that rocks! Partially barrel-fermented in large oak barrels made from Grenache, Cinsault, and Rolle (Vermentino). This rosé bears a more complex and structured taste profile than Whispering Angel bringing it into a more premium realm giving rosé lovers a bigger and richer wine that is fabulous as an aperitif or paired with a broad range of fine cuisine. If you like the minerality of a Sancerre, you will love this wine.

100% Barbera from a single cru called “Bricco Uffizio,” located in Penango, north of the town of Asti. Deep ruby red color. Aromas of spice, tar, and fresh cherry and cranberries. On the palate, there is plenty of soft, subtle tannins and acidity. Just a touch more body and spice than most Barbera.

100% Garnacha (Grenache). Scala Dei, Latin for the "Ladder of God", is considered the oldest winery in the Priorat region. The winery was established by the Carthusian monks in 1163 and black slate soils cover their 40 sites. They have extremely low yields so the end result is high quality, highly concentrated grapes. This is a fresh wine dominated by red fruit notes. Ruby red color with bluish hues that denote its youth. Aromas of ripe red berries with underlying mineral hints from the licorella terroir. Red berries reappear on the palate with a rounded mouthfeel. A balanced wine with lots of fresh fruit.

28 Months in 65% New French Oak in medium+ oak barrels. Dense purple color, an aromatic profile of cedar, blueberry and earth. Ripe red and dark fruit pop out of the glass along with notes of anise and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is textured but not heavy. Within 15-30 minutes time, this wine opens up and is the fruit is complimented by dark chocolate, oak, and leathery micronuances.

95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. This Pomerol has got power! Vineyard Moze Berthon decided to call on Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, co-owner of Chateau Angelus and wine-making councilor for expertise. This full-bodied red has a silky and sensuous texture. Aromas of roses and ripe, luscious plums and red cherries. On the palate, fruit and cocoa powder that lingers on the finish.95 pts. - James Suckling92 pts. - Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. Giovanni Gaja was the great-grandfather of Angelo Gaja, the Winery's current owner.

In 1994, GAJA acquired its first wine estate in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino. This estate produces three Brunello di Montalcino wines- including the single vineyard Sugarille- from vineyard holdings totaling sixty five acres.

In 1996 Gaja acquired a second property in Tuscany, Ca'Marcanda, located in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. Of the property's 200 acres, 150 have been planted with new vineyards: primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Come by TVP and taste wines from Arlaux, Capitain Gagnerot, and Bernard Defaix!

As early as 1320, the name Arlaux appeared in the margin of a document mentioning a transaction of the Abbey of Saint-Remi concerning the vinage (wine making) and the payment of the title. In 1792, the Royal Abbey of Saint-Remi was seized and sold as national property. Nicolas Arlaux then acquired the vineyards and lands that the family had already been cultivating for several centuries under the monks’ rule. However, it was not until 1826, one year after the coronation of Charles X, the last King of France that Jean Arlaux decided to produce his first bottles of sparkling wine. He had no idea of knowing that a century later, champagne would represent the totality of production, thus replacing the red and grey wines which had filled the coffers of the Abbey of Saint-Remi. For more than 15 generations the Arlaux family has passionately maintained the land that, in the 1950’s, Boris Vian the poet had called “the center of the world” (Le nombril du Monde)…a simple patch of vineyards plunging its roots into the depths of History.

The Domaine Gagnerot was established in 1802. In 1864 Marie, Jean-Baptiste’s unique daughter, marries François Capitain, wine trader, native of Champlitte. Together, Jean-Baptiste and François establish the Domaine Capitain-Gagnerot. After the phylloxera crisis which ravaged the Burgundian vineyard from the 1870s the the 1880s, Marie then widowed, decides to keep the domaine and to replant it vines. The succession is since made from father to son. After the Second World War, Roger Capitain inherits 3 hectares of vineyards and a wine trade. His two sons, Patrice and Michel, take over the domaine upon his retirement. Today, the domaine comprise 16 hectares of vineyards in full ownership, and it is Pierre-François and Delphine, Patrice’s children, who now oversee its destiny, supported by their spouses.

Fourth generation from a family of vine-growers, Bernard Defaix started with 2 ha in 1959. From this period, a method to protect the vineyard against spring frost was discovered. Thanks to this, the vine-growers could be sure to have a minimum of harvest every year and so they began to develop stable trade markets. The two sons of Bernard have been managing the domain since twenty years or so. Sylvain is in charge of the vinification, the ageing, the bottling and the preparation of orders. Didier takes care of the vineyard and the general management of the domain. Helene, Didier’s wife, looks after the administrative and the commercial part. The domain stretches over 27 hectares : Chablis Premier Cru (Côte de Lechet, Vaillons and Lys), Chablis and Petit Chablis. For many years yet, we have moved towards a sustainable and more ecological farming. Organic farming is the logical result of all this work.
