French Week: Special #2 Today's Featured Wine:

Chateau Lagrange, Saint-Julien, France

Several months back, we had met Charlotte, a representative of Chateau Lagrange and had the privilege of tasting several different vintages. A vertical was poured that spanned for over a decade and we both thought that it was a great history lesson, one where you learn the weather patterns for that year and technological advances they made. One thing that I love about Chateau Lagrange is the value, reliability, and typicity of the wine. Throughout the years, their wines have been incredible and have had an affordable price point for Bordeaux. Each case comes in wood with the purchase of one case. They look really cool as a decoration or presentation piece for your wine cellar! See below for more information...

2011 Chateau Lagrange, Saint-Julien, France$46.50/BTL.

2012 Chateau Lagrange, Saint-Julien, France$42.99/BTL.

2011 Chateau Lagrange Les Fiefs de Lagrange, Saint-Julien, France$28.50/BTL.

The 2011 vintage was the hottest and almost the dryest on record. It is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. The grapes were picked between 15th of September and the 5th of October. It has a refined and understated nose at first, before unfolding in the glass to offer brambly black fruit, mint and cedar - one of those Lagrange wines mimicking Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with attractive supple tannins. It is very smooth and silky thanks to the vanillary new oak that needs to be subsumed with time. But it is a subtle, precise Lagrange that should give pleasure over the next 20 years (2017-2030).The 2012 vintage would be considered a normal year with not an excessive amount of rainfall and average temperatures. It is a blend consisting of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 3% of Petit Verdot. Dark red with tangy notes of cassis and black cherry, the nose is very expressive. The palate is silky, smooth, almost creamy. A very harmonious and balanced wine that impresses with the characteristic elegance of the vintage (2017-2030).The 2011 Les Fief de Lagrange has a similar blend to his predecessors, with less Petit Verdot. The final blending of the Fiefs de Lagrange 2011 consisted of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. With a crimson red color, the nose is fruity, cherries, raspberries and currants give freshness to this early vintage. The Cabernet Sauvignon elegantly brings the tannic structure that’s needed. Good length for this wine whose vines have an average age of 30 years and over (2015-2025).
