It’s hard to imagine that for all of those who have such a passion for California wines that it was 40 years ago that both Chateau Montelena and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars gained international acclaim by winning the 1976 Paris Tasting. Maybe if we would all still be drinking only Old World wines. Bo Barrett has certainly come a long way since then. Now CEO and Master Winemaker, he oversees the entire winery and has faith in his winemaking team.Their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon consists of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc and is barrel aged 14 months in French and Eastern European Oak, with 16% new oak. It has beautiful black fruit, vanilla, and coffee bean aromatics. It has great mouthfeel, where fresh strawberries, and raspberries are distinguishable right away. You also get nice acidity and round tannin structure that really brings everything into balance. The finish is long and has a nice brightness to it. Their Cab is a really great, soft, medium-bodied wine that would be considered easily approachable. It is in the easy-drinking style and would certainly be great for a Sunday night red for dinner or for a Friday night out!
